It was an inspiring 24 hours, as I heard Teriano share her story with our World Vision team, to those attending the event, and to various media.  Here is one of the articles that came from our 24 hours together (I have also included links to a radio interview below) - a day that has inspired me further about the importance of having a global mindset, and of the ‘power of one’….

The Power of One

If there’s a take-away message to be found in the award-winning French documentary BABIES, it’s that all human beings are basically the same, regardless of where we’re born or the conditions in which we’re raised.

Watching a year in the life of four adorable babies living in four very different environments — the hustle and bustle of Tokyo, the remote Mongolian countryside, neo-hippy urban San Francisco and a small tribal community in the Namibian desert — this couldn’t be more obvious.

Yet sometimes I think we forget this. Just as a baby is a baby is a baby, all of us are the same, in that we all deserve love, dignity and the opportunity to grow into our potential.

The event’s theme was education and the difference it can make in a child’s life. One of the guest speakers was Teriano, a young woman who grew up in a traditional Masai village in Kenya. (Teriano) was sponsored through World Vision by an Australian couple when she was about four, and was one of the first kids in her village to attend school.

The experience profoundly changed the trajectory of her life. Traditionally, girls were valued less than boys in her culture, she explained, leading struggling families to marry off their daughters as young teens for the dowry payments they’d receive in return. This was supposed to have been Lasancha’s fate. Instead, she went on to become the first girl in her community to go to college.

Now in her 20s, (Teriano) has been living in Toronto for the past three years, where she’s studying…at Ryerson. On a recent trip home, she was able to build her family a house and buy her father some livestock.

She spoke about what she called “the power of one.”

“If you can touch one life, that one life can touch others,” she said.

“I was the one sponsored, but that impacted my brothers and my community. My family changed. The perception of women in my community changed.

“Don’t say ‘I’m only one person, what can I do?’ You can do something — and that something you can do? Do it.”

More than 500,000 children in 48 countries are currently being sponsored by 465,000 Canadians, a number that includes 17,874 Manitobans and 9,971 Winnipeggers.

Born into circumstances beyond their control, they’re living in very different conditions than we are here in Canada. They’re also just like us.

Over the course of the 2 weeks, we heard some stories that take your breath away. But one of the most beautiful was the night before we left. Our gentle driver Eustance had already dug himself pretty deeply in my heart, but a combination of preparing to leave and fatigue made him open up at supper in a way I had never seen before.

Here is my understanding of Eustance’s story – clearly restaurant noise and a very tired brain may fuzz some details, but those of us sitting at his end of the table were blessed to hear this incredible story.

Eustance came from a terribly poor family. His Father was a policeman who made a very low wage and he lived with relatives to try and complete his high school. They were unhappy having him, so he went to school on an empty stomach every day and pushed through long days without any food. By the time his break for Grade 12 exams came, he was so exhausted that he literally fell asleep every time he sat down to study.

The years of pushing his body, hunger and physical exhaustion made that period of his life extremely difficult, and he didn’t get high enough marks to go to college as he dreamed about. He found work as a regional bus driver, driving long hours between Lusaka and other centres. He was very familiar with World Vision’s work in his hometown, and remembers seeing WV vehicles pass his bus. Every time one went by, he silently asked God to make a way for him to work for World Vision (What struck me, is how he prayed believing it would happen from the very start). Finally he decided to send an application.

He didn’t wait for a job to come open, he just decided to send a resume and see what happened. 6 times he sent his resume and one day, after months of hearing nothing, word came – they wanted to interview him for a position as a driver in Lusaka. Unfortunately, he was hours away. He managed to procure a day off from his current job (without having divulge why he needed the time off!), but he was stranded at least a 6 hour bus ride away. Now, the bus system in Zambia, is nothing like Canada. He spoke to the driver of the bus that day and the driver indicated what he already knew – the bus stays parked by the side of the road, waiting until it is full before it departs. Most days it takes about 6-8 hours from the time you buy a ticket, for the bus to be on it’s way. And even then, it stops wherever people need to be dropped off – it could stop dozens of times before it finally reaches it’s final destination. There is no such thing as a schedule! Eustance went back to his hotel and called the WV office for his interview time. He calculated the time between his location and Lusaka and the bus situation and realized there was no way he could make his slotted interview time.

So he got on his knees. He told God he knew this was not a problem for Him and he trusted him to help make a way. He proceeded back down to the bus, and the surprised driver informed him that the bus was already unexpectedly full. He hopped aboard, and the bus went straight to Lusaka, no stops, and he arrived right on time for the interview!

 A month went by, and he knew they had interviewed another man as well, so he assumed the position was given to the other man. Until one day he again got word, that he was required to come for a second interview in Lusaka. Once again, he was hours away, and once again he knelt before God, asking him to intercede. And once again, that bus filled immediately and made a non-stop drive to Lusaka, in time for his interview. This time he was peppered with demanding questions, while driving, no less!

After 6 resumes, 2 interviews and countless miracles, Eustance was officially a World Vision employee. He hasn’t had any accidents in 9 years and he credits that to getting on his knees every morning and asking God for safety. I’ll never forget his words: “I told my wife My God Loves Me“.

Indeed he does, and his story is a reminder of how very far God goes to see His plans succeed.

Thank you for taking the journey with me….

Upon arriving in Canada, after taking the journey back through Livingstone (Zambia) to Johannesburg (South Africa), then off to London (U.K.), Toronto and then Winnipeg, evidently the size of the bag resulted it is being tossed about, likely placed on the bottom of piles during transfer, and – from the indication of how things arrived – likely danced upon by a herd or two of elephants.  Needless to say, the majority of the items I had brought home (including a salad bowl for my wife, a wood carving of a giraffe and it’s foal, two stone elephant book-ends and other gifts) were in pieces.  Disappointing, given the amount of bartering and careful packing that went into bringing this home for our family and a volunteer friend of mine, but – hey, it’s only ‘stuff – not the end of the world.

This one piece, however, has slowly been rebuilt on our counter, with phases of gluing and assembling pieces together – about 20 in total – happening on a regular basis, sometimes in lieu of other projects that are more pressing and important.  I am fully aware that the final product will likely end up on the curbside next week, but…still…I continue to glue these pieces together for some strange reason…

Now, without waxing the over-dramatic, as I was gluing the next-to-final pieces together (see photo) of this piece, I cannot help but see some parallels between the piecing together of this – once visibly perfect – work of art, to the piecing together of myself as I return to what can be referred to as ‘normal life’ now that I am back in Canada.  It’s been a time of transition (realizing that I have not driven a vehicle in well over two weeks as I hopped into my vehicle this morning), a time of reflection (showing my family the video and pictures of our experiences in Zambia, as well as updating this blog, with great level of emotion in doing so), a time of confusion (what does this mean to our life now, given I’ve seen such a significant piece of what poverty –  and the African culture –  looks like), and a time of discussion (between Karen and I on how this is affecting both of us).  My Facebook post earlier today reflects how I currently feel:  “Chris Schroeder…is feeling a little out of place.”

I think I am just putting together the pieces, not unlike I am doing with the broken sculpture.  Just like the sculpture, I know there will be pieces that don’t quite fit the way they used to, that there will be some imperfections that stand out as a result of being ‘broken’, and that it may take additional time for the broken pieces to settle. 

I just know one thing.  These pieces that are coming together are going to shape who I – and my family – are for the years to come.  It cannot help but create a ‘work of art’ that is unlike that of the original.  However, this rebuilding is not going to result in a final product that simply get’s ‘taken to the curb’ in the near future. 

It’s here to stay….no matter what it ends up looking like.

We had learned a long time ago to react to all thinks with a “no problem” mentality, which is probably why the trip had gone so well and our team had managed through things together without any major incidents.  This was also to be the case with the photo gallery showing of the pictures our students had taken throughout the previous 12 days….

a) the printer we had purchased would not communicate with our computers

b) once the issue was resolved (faulty cable), the photos printed with what was accurately described as more of an ‘Andy Warhol’ type look (only certain colours worked, rendering photos red and blue – cool if we were aiming for a certain creativity, but we simply wanted pictures the kids could take home,

c) our alternative, putting the photos on display on the wall via a projector – a great idea, it seemed, was foiled given the power had gone out that morning and had no desire to return.

So, here we were – in a dimly lit room, with electronic equipment that was rendered useless, smiling at each other and knowing this was just another manifestation of how life is here in Zambia;  no luxuries, and no promises that the ones available to us would work (my shower, the internet connection, the printer, electricity and water being a short list of examples).  Needless to say, we sat back and simply enjoyed our time with the families of these students, viewing pictures on Colin and Christy’s laptops, and handing them their cameras to ‘exhibit’ their work to their guests.

Following this informal time together, where Coca-Cola, Orange Fanta, and Sprite were served to excited children, our host – Godwin, from the World Vision Zambia office – and our team prepared a short program, including some special music by Colin and Christy, and the singing of our respective national anthems.  We then reflected together on the visit, with the ‘formal’ program ending.  We continued to say express our appreciation to each other as we awaiting our return to Livingstone.

We were called outside by Godwin, and were surprised by a team of youth who started to dance and act out various dramatic stories (in the local language, which meant a lot of puzzled looks by our team, especially given the active response by the local people).  We were advised following the presentation that this was a drama and dance that was used to educate local people on the values of hygene – which would have been my last guess, given the content.  I was even singled out during the drama as someone who ‘had Canadian hair’ as part of the drama.  I think it was supposed to be a positive thing, but the jury is still out on that.

Once this time together was over, we said our final good-byes and packed into the Land Cruiser to return to Livingstone, another 20+ hours of flight, and a welcome return home to our families.  It was hard to think about leaving, but yet our experience had been so full that we knew we could do so without regret. 

My reflections from my previous post sums up my feelings I am experiencing as we drive away from Kalomo, as we see the town become smaller in our rear window…

“I have inhaled the dust of this beautiful country, and long for the day that I am able to return to the dust that I am now washing off by shoes.  I don’t know if – or when – that could happen, but I know my heart will return here often…”

We just wrapped up our final evening in Kalomo (prior to returning to Livingstone for one evening and then beginning our long trek back to Canada) – although I may be home by the time this reaches you through cyber-space. 

We sat around at dinner and informally shared some of the highlights and emotions from this journey, and had a farewell sharing and prayer time for Breanna, one of our volunteers, who will be remaining in Zambia for several days following our departure working with a Zambian mission that serves orphans in the country.  After completing this time, we then returned to our guest house to start packing.

Once the bags were packed, and then packed again to make sure everything fit (and that we did not think we were going to exceed the baggage weight limit), I decided it would be a good idea to wash my sandals. Given we had walked several miles today, and would soon be travelling in confined spaces where well worn, dirt and sweat caked footwear would not be considered welcome – no matter what experiences came along with them – I decided I would wear mine into the shower and soap them down well so that they’d be fresh for the hours on the plane.

Well, there was no question that that soil of Zambia had attached itself to these well-used sandals.  As I scrubbed them, and saw the dirt run off of the shoe and down the drain, I could not help but feel a little…well, sad.

This soil is the soil where I met our sponsored child, Chipo, and her dancing grandmother.  This soil is the soil where I had opportunity to see how education was making a different through the World Vision schools.  It is the soil where I first had my ‘aha’ moment as I heard about how a simple Medical Clinic can save hundreds – and thousands – of lives.  It has collected on my shoes as I have walked through the market, said ‘Mulli Butti’ in about a thousand ways except the correct way.  It is the dirt from the goat farm.  The dirt from Patricia’s home.  It is the soil that millions of Zambian’s have walked on throughout time, determined to overcome the challenges they face.

And there it goes, down the drain.

I stop and think about this for a moment.  I consider myself so blessed to have walked this soil.  To have stood on the land of many being positively affected by the work the organization I am part of – World Vision.  To have shared it with our colleagues in the World Vision Kalomo Area Development Project.  To have been blessed to have witnessed so many things on it that will not leave my heart or my soul.

I pause, and recognize that this is part of the transition to the world I know, the one with great people who are so willing to step forward to help when needed.  The world where we have our own ‘version’ of poverty.  The world where we have the resources to actually DO SOMETHING about this (and I find that exciting!!).  The world that I hope to be part of changing –even ever so slightly – so that people like those we have met in Zambia can have a future that is filled with hope, health and God’s love.

I have inhaled the dust of this beautiful country, and long for the day that I am able to return to the dust that I am now washing off by shoes.  I don’t know if – or when – that could happen, but I know my heart will return here often.

I gave them similar gifts as I had provided the others in the group visit, and advised them that – with their permission – I was going to tell their stories to the people in Canada in order to find families who would care enough to sponsor them and to provide the benefits I had just encountered during my home visits to Chipo and Haggai, and my group visit with Musanka, Shylet and Cledwin. 

Their stories will be told upon my return to Canada, and will be told on this blog at a later date.  These are just of a sample of the many families need our help here in Kalomo, and around the world…

We hopped into the Land Cruiser and took a similar path as the one we did last week when we went to the medical clinic.  The family was that of Patricia Madenda, and she lived about a 30 minute walk from the clinic.  We drove by some familiar sites, drove through the same streams, and saw – once again – the ‘strip mall’ and the medical clinic and school.  On the way, we even had opportunity to ‘hitch a ride’ in an ox cart!  After this experience (that many of us had hoped we would have chance to do in Zambia), we picked up the local World Vision Community Leader, and drove to the home that we would be spending the next several hours visiting.

Upon arrival, Patricia came to greet us and to welcome us to her home.  We gathered in a covered shelter (we found that most of our meetings were in the shade of huts or the shelter of the overhangs of their homes, given the heat), and she shared a bit into her current situation.  She was a widow, had several children (nine?), and was thankful that we were interested in learning about what it is that she – as a mother of this large crew – went through each day to ensure the family was fed, healthy and educated.

After our introduction, with its awkward pauses and heartbreaking statements about what this women had to encounter each day (with a shy smile, of course – a signature of these people who face so much, but stay so positive in the midst of it all).  We then followed her for a short walk to her garden, where she went for several hours each day to maintain, water, and to pick the harvest of her efforts to bring home for her family.

As we walked away from her homestead, I pulled out my video camera.  Might as well get some good footage of our team walking to the garden, and a shot of the garden itself.  Given it was a short walk, and that it would not be long, I started shooting video of us ‘approaching’ the garden.  This happened several times, as I figured a ‘short walk’ (quotations added, as it was evident it was anything but short), would mean just a few more steps.

Thirty minutes into our journey, we turned the corner and I – finally – got the shot I was hoping for.  Here was her garden, weed-less, well kept and bringing in a harvest that was significant.  But, why 30 minutes from her home?  Why not just outside of her home, as we would do if we were in the same circumstance?  I ask the question, and am advised that the garden is next to the life-sustaining water source of a stream, and – thus – the walk…

Patricia shows us how she waters her garden, walking down the steep path to the stream, carrying the heavy water container up the hill, and then placing her hand in front of the spout to create a ‘nozzle’ to water the garden.  After seeing her do this, we looked at each other – all knowing what needed to be done – and then each grabbed a container and did the same. 

The water containers were not light – and as a group of us we worked hard to water 1/3 of her garden.  Patricia seemed appreciative, but I could already tell from her personality and attention to detail that she would likely be  re-watering many of them later in the day, just to ensure they had the proper amount of water – and no less.

Our next journey was to the water pump, and we each carried our water containers to the pump – once again, about a 20 minute walk, but it was back in the direction of the home.  We walked up to the pump, and each took our turns filling the containers.  Trying to get the whole experience, I attempted to put it on my head – but that did not last long.  Sure, having a towel to wrap and place on my head would have helped, but this Canadian neck was not built for such tasks.

Another 10 – 15 minute walk and we were back at Patricia’s home – where more family members were awaiting us.  Some of the school kids were evidently given a leave from school, or were on an extended lunch break, as they were awaiting our return.  We met back under the shelter, asking questions and relaxing after a fairly active work-out, and then brought out some gifts for the family.

We first brought out my bag of Mealie-Meal, originally intended for a visit later in the afternoon, and Patricia was thrilled.  We then opened additional gifts, including items for the family, and games for the kids.

I had noticed the older boys were sitting off to the side, casual but interested, and brought a bag of games we had brought for the family over to them.  One of the games was Dominos, and I asked the guys if they would be interested in playing.  Given they had taken several years of English in school, this was one of the situations that I was able to manage without an interpreter.  We pulled out the Dominos, and I showed them how to play – each of us keeping our hands available to view in the interest of teaching.  Some of the guys got it – others needed extra help – but we played a full game together.  Early on in the game I had one tile left, and I must admit I thought about how winning would be received.  However, next turn and I could not play – and I ended up being beat at the game in the end!

A meal was prepared for us over an open fire, and we each took our turn at mixing the meal that was being prepared for us – not an easy task, given its consistency.  We then helped with a few extra tasks, including removing maize from the maize cobs, some of us playing soccer with the kids, and then began to say our good-byes.

As we drove away, I could not help but have a better sense of what it is that these families must do each day, and how they are so much in a routine that these difficult tasks that we had completed were simply part of their daily tasks.  Made me long a bit for home, though, as I saw how these family members interacted and were part of this process.

What an experience this past few days have been for me.  Makes me grateful…and also gives me a sense that I will not – anytime soon – forget the hard work of the Zambian people…

Reflecting on the day over a hot cup of tea is not a bad way to end the day.  Makes me wonder why they did not invite me over earlier on….!

“We awoke to the discovery that the village water main had broken and our guest house had no water. It could happen anywhere, but it seems a bit more daunting in Africa. Good thing we have an abundance of bottled water at least! On our agenda for the morning was a 25 km crossroad trip from Kalomo to a MED (micro-enterprise development ) farming project. The farmer that we met, Boyd Mweemba, had received World Vision Canada financing and a one week educational program on running an agricultural business and learning about improved agricultural techniques.

A father of 5, he grows maize, bananas and sunflowers, had planted 14 orange trees, and keeps bees. He had previously kept bees in the traditional method – using a bark hive. Through better agriculture instruction, he had begun using a roofed wooden hive with separate sections which provided better protection from the elements, an easier way to check on the maturity of the combs, and a higher yield of honey. Also, the bark taken from trees, ultimately kills the tree, and forestation is very important to the ecoculture of Zambia. The honey from the Mweembe hives is now being sold to others in the community for income. Boyd’s farm was an example of how start up financing pays enormous dividends. He has had a huge harvest of maize this year and can support the needs of his family and live a self sufficient life. He has also repaid World Vision from his earnings.

The next MED, we visited was truly a marvel of best agricultural practices. Farmer Oliver Mana, has a busy life as a hard working farmer. He is the father of 5 children – 3 in school – and operates a large vegetable, goat, and dairy farm. The 10 year old project, started with World Vision purchasing 8 goats plus one billy. Oliver also attended a training program facilitated by World Vision with accountable goals. By the first year’s end, there were 30 goats. Sale of some of the goats meant income generation. The farmer was then able to purchase cows for plowing and milk, and World Vision provided seeds for tomatoes. spinach, rape, and carrots. Goat manure is being used as fertilizer, and anti-fungal and anti-pesticide chemicals are used to keep crops healthy, even during the rainy season. When some of the goats developed a skin disease, a local World Vision volunteer expert on animal husbandry, was able to suggest a vaccine to save the rest of the herd.

Oliver was also able to purchase chickens and sells chickens at market along with the vegetables. He has an irrigation system (water pump) that we all tried out. It’s a foot treadle operation (looks a bit like a stairmaster!) and it’s a 2 man or woman job. One treads while the other pours buckets of water, from a nearby watering hole, into attached cannisters. A long, wide, rubber hose carries the water to garden areas which are flooded. Some weeds are left in place to hold water in the soil. It is tough work to use the treadle and after a few minutes, I had to step down. My admiration for the work ethic of Zambian agricultural workers knows no bounds!  It is not surprising that life expectancy for an adult male averages about 40 years.  Oliver has re-paid World Vision 50% of his loan and once again supports his family, pays school fees and lives a good life. He is a role model in his community.

We boarded our trusty Toyota Land Cruiser and went on to meet the Mapono Youth Group in Kalomo, about a half hour away.   This youth group was started several years ago under the auspices of World Vision. Starting small with 60 members, it now numbers over 500. It operates somewhat like a recreation program with spiritual values, and is held once a week. Members play sports, sing, create rap poetry and are involved as peer mentors (recommending abstinence) in the fight against HIV transmission. They are hoping to start some entrepreneurial businesses, perhaps sewing clothing, so that they can each earn money. About 30 members were present for our get together. They sang and recited poetry – rap style – and answered questions about their challenges. We were witness to some strong talent in their presentation; and they cheered when a soccer ball was presented to them from our group.

In the afternoon, our 3rd Photo Workshop for children went very well. The children were asked to photograph images of things they felt conveyed hope for the future, or of things they really liked. Some of the photographs were of professional calibre. Pictures of green bananas at close range, a red car on the street, a landscaped grouping of young palm trees, a pile of bricks in a lot, some pretty girls; these were some of the images that I was privy to see. The children will meet tomorrow to pick their favourites, photograph some more, and then we’ll hold our photo exhibit on Thursday. Another great day! Thanks to the fabulous staff at the ADP office for creating such an incredible experience for us!”

I had heard a truck go by with inaudible voices coming through a megaphone, something that I am aware means that a public announcement is being made.  This one, evidently, is that the power will be going down for the evening (after a full day of no water as well).  I sit here in the glow of my laptop, knowing that the majority of this town is now sitting in the dark.  I think I will do the same, and reflect on my experiences thus far…

The people of Zambia have spirituality and faith at their core.  Turn the channels on to the only broadcast television station, and it is advertising a Michael W Smith concert in Lusaka next month, mixed with 30 minute ‘serials’ that focus on God’s power over evil.  Our ADP staff offer to pray as often as possible at meals and before our daily journeys.  As we drove by various churches and visited the Baptist Church in Livingstone, the sounds or praises emitting from their doors is mesmerizing.  The sponsored families share about their faith in God as I sit with them and discuss their lives and aspirations with them.  It is not forced in any way – it is just who they are.  It’s just that simple.

A simple faith in what can be considered a complicated situation.  It’s inspiring to see and experience….

We head down another of those winding paths – although this one is quite smooth in comparison to others – to a local Goat farm, which has been established as part of the World Vision sponsorship program.  We stop in at the farm, and are welcomed by a well groomed, well dressed young man who directs us to a seating area in the shade.  We are told he is the farmer in charge of this project.  As we settle into the chairs provided, while several others sit on the benches being constructed on the spot, we are welcomed (through an interpreter), as this man begins to share a ‘short story’.

There was a boy who was a good learner.  His mother and father wished for this boy to continue his education, to get good grades, and to be able to get a job of his choosing as he became an adult.  So they made a deal with the boy – if you get good grades and complete your schooling, we will purchase you a car.  This made the boy very happy, as there were few in his community who owned their own cars.  He worked hard for many years, and the day of graduation came.  He had received top honors as a result of the hard work, and upon graduation, was presented with a gift.  He opened the parcel, and inside was…a Bible.  He was heart –broken.  Why would his parent promise him a car, and then get him a Bible?  This ate at him night and day, and – one evening, when the opportunity presented itself – his anger took over and he killed his parents.  It was not until later, when he was skimming through his books that he came upon the Bible that his parents had given him.  He opened this Bible, and an envelope fell out.  In this envelope was a letter from his parents, and – sadly – a cheque to be used to purchase a vehicle.  The son was devastated.

(Note:  For those in attendance, we had understood through the disconnect in translation that this was his story – resulting in gasps as he shared of the killing of the parents.  It was not until later that we were advised that this was simply a tale.   Phew!)

The farmer went on to explain how we so often look at our circumstances as not favourable, and yet if we look deeper we will find good in things – the ‘cheque in the Bible’ – which was exactly what this group of farmers had done.

A group of farmers had been given two goats as part of the World Vision development project activities.  This group of farmers had taken these goats, bred them with the male goats, and produced offspring (which were given to others in the community as part of the ‘first fruits’ requirement with many World Vision programs).  These goats, as well as the ones given away, continued to multiply, providing an income for the group of farmers.  With this money, they bought some livestock to help them plow the fields.  Instead of using precious funds to purchase fertilizer for the crops, they were trained in how to use the compost and goat droppings to fertilize their fields, and the crops became quite large.  Through this process, they have also started a new ‘Sustainable Farming’ program where they rotate the crops that they grow on each parcel of land, not only extending the use of their land (many will farm and then leave, as the crops remove the nutrients and future crops fail, but providing higher yields than many of the farms in the area.  As a result of their success, they now conduct seminars for other farmers on ‘Sustainable Farming’, and have over one hundred goats!

One of the youth, as part of their new Youth Training program, shared about the program that the youth were involved in, with a garden project that is exclusively theirs.  He shared, in front of his fellow youth, their pride in the work that they were doing, and their gratefulness to World Vision for being part of the project. 

Following the formal portion of the visit, we were invited to the goat pen, where many of us were able to get some ‘photo opportunities’ with the goats.  One of our team, Breanna, even drank fresh milk from one of the goats, along with one of our drivers, Eustance.  I had the opportunity to meet one of the elders in the project, who was thrilled that we were there to share in the work that they were doing.

Following this, the team went to visit the garden, and to hear more about how they were using sustainable farming to enrich the soil. 

I had come prepared for a certain level of poverty within this project, but was pleasantly surprised to see innovation, success and pride in the workers at the project.  Another cause to celebrate the virtues of approaching poverty from the perspective of developmental sustainability!

We left the project knowing that these people were going to do well, and that they would be bringing others to success along with them.  What an inspiring opportunity to see the help that we, as Canadians, can give to others through sponsorship!

It was good to see my family via Skype Webcam, and to share with them a bit of what the week had been like – including my journey to meet Chipo – given I had limited opportunity to during the week (we are seven hours ahead here, which does not make for an easy schedule given Karen works during the days). My heart melted the moment the Web Cam showed the lovely faces of my sons and daughters, and of my beautiful wife. She has sacrificed so much to make this trip happen, and has deliberately taken the load on so that I can fully experience this journey.

I love you, Karen. And, kids, I love each of you. Know you are blessed, and have a husband / dad who cares for you, and is grateful for what we have. I miss you, and look forward to the day we get to see each other again. I have so many stories to share with you all…

Once our visit was over, Haggai’s father walked in front of the van to show us a ‘short-cut’ back to Zimba, using the axe that he had made (he makes axes as an additional income for his family) to cut down the twigs and various obstructions on the road. It baffles me how anyone knows how to get anywhere outside of the major centers, as there are many trails and lots of forks in the road, sometimes providing three or four different options. Up until this point, the World Vision staff who regularly visited these families would shout out ‘left’, ‘right’ or ‘straight’, but you could tell there was some concern in following this unknown path – specifically when the path no longer existed, and we got hung up on a tree stump. But, we ended up at a worn path after driving through the rough terrain in the field, at which point Haggai’s father shook my hand, and waved goodbye.

We returned to Zimba for a quick lunch (in the middle of the afternoon), and then off to a pre-empted photo workshop, which I was to host. What a wonderful day, full of emotion, experiences and validation about the work that we do.

We continued down similar terrain, which quickly became an obvious maize growing area, as the crop was regularly rubbing up against our vehicle as we bounced from one side of the vehicle to the other. After several minutes of travel, the vehicle stopped and a young farmer hopped into the vehicle. I extended my hand to welcome him, only to find out that this was Haggai’s father and three of his siblings!
As we approached we, once again, needed to switch to 4 wheel drive (I will always understand why the need for such rugged vehicles after this visit), and the men started to push the vehicle so that it would move on. You could tell the father was apologetic for the condition of the roads, but it was now part of the journey we were on. While the others were assisting the vehicle out (yes, I was sitting in the vehicle – I had been told to, either because I was a guest or it was obvious I would be of little help), the children in the van and I started playing catch with a small ball I had put aside for the siblings. Once we were out, and arrived at the village, they threw the ball back to me, to which I tossed it back and pointed at them, to indicate they could keep it. Grins formed all around.

We met beside their house, with many more in this meeting than my previous, and with the father who was over-eager to please and to make me as comfortable as possible. I gave the father the bag of Mealie Meal (Buusu) that I had picked up at the local market a few days earlier, to which a grin formed across his face. I met Haggai, and had a chance to hold him during our time together. We shared details about our families, and I brought out the items that the sponsors had sent specifically for this visit.

I showed them the art work created by two of the children in the sponsor family, and read to them a letter that had been written by the eldest and her mother. They hung on every word as I read the letter and had it translated, and smiled when I showed them the photos of the sponsor family’s children taken in the snow during this past winter. They had questions about how this snow formed, and I had opportunity to explain to them, with wide-eyed response.

I went further in the bag to pull out the gifts the sponsor family had provided – clothing, two pairs of shoes, and other various items. I also gave them some beans, cooking oil and dried fish, which you could tell would be a welcome treat for upcoming meals. They were all thrilled. Haggai was happy with his gifts, but we could tell it was approaching his nap time, as he began to fall asleep in my arms. I continued to have a discussion with the family, and then asked for a tour of their home.

Haggai sleeps in a small hut with several of his siblings, a mat on the floor as his bed. As I look around his room, I see a hard cover book with ‘Wonders of the World’ written on its cover. As I was looking at the book, Haggai fell asleep in my arms, reminding me of bringing my own sleeping kids to their rooms after a late night of travelling. When asked if someone read this to Haggai, his father advised that his eldest sister read to him at night. I then saw the place where his parents slept, the kitchen area, and where the family stored their maize.

It had come upon time to start heading back to Zimba, as we had a long drive still ahead of us. Earlier in our time together, I had asked for one of my colleagues to go back to the van to get a pair of shoes that had been sent by my associate at the World Vision Central Canada office, Colleen, to give away as the need arose, given I had noticed his shoes were in tatters. We posed for a picture, but not before I handed the pair of shoes to Haggai’s father. He was so eager to put his shoes on for the picture that we needed to wait until he could get them on. He was so thrilled, and the shoes fit well!

I started to say good-bye to the family, handing a sleeping Haggai off to his mother. However, I had one final experience in store for me…

- The majority of these people are resourceful. We sometimes see these families that are part of the sponsorship program as being totally helpless. What many of them simply need is a hand-up; resources so they can succeed on their own. They don’t need us to ‘fix’ everything, just the basic of life to survive.

- There is pride in the little that many of these people posses. This grandmother took pride in the little they had as a family, taking care of what she had. This grandmother has very basic things: some structures, some fabric, and the ability to grow a garden. She kept each of these things in tip-top condition, and her family was benefitting as a result.

- Many of these people are not alone in their situations. As we saw, the community had connection with Chipo and her grandmother, and rejoiced in Chipo’s opportunity to meet me and the World Vision team. There was a true sense of community, and a joy that spread to all in attendance as the grandmother danced and the bag of food was provided. There was no evident jealousy – just joy. Pure joy.

- Those who sponsor may not realize the extent that they are helping. Yes, they read the updates and often will write to their sponsored children and receive responses. This is all good. However, it has become clear to me that the moment a child and family are added to the sponsorship program, the act of transformation begins. Through education and training, the provision of basic needs, healthcare and regular visits by the ADP staff, these families become part of the journey to self-sustainability. I’ve seen it with my own eyes, and will forever share of the importance of doing so.

For those of you who have yet to sponsor a child, here is my plea: Do it. Let all of the stigmas and doubts pass, and take the step forward and truly change a life in the way I have seen it today. I will have two additional sponsor children that I will be meeting next week, Josephine (4) and Lovely (10), and know of others in the Kalomo ADP that will need you to make a difference in their lives upon my return. Comment on this blog if you wish to be part of the transformational work that is going on in the Kalomo ADP as a result of organizations like World Vision and change many lives as a result!

With others in the group looking on, as well as a group from the community observing from a distance, I began to speak to her grandmother, with Chipo firmly planted in my arms. I learned that Chipo lives with her grandmother and one brother. Her parents farm some distance away with her older siblings, and that they all work in the fields to make a living, and that Chipo has not seen her parents for over six months…

I showed Chipo and her grandmother a picture that I had brought with me for both Chipo and her grandmother, and introduced her to my family. I shared with them that Karen, Micah, Abigail, Joel and Jordan all sent their love, and she smiled as she looked at the photo.

When asked about Chipo’s health, her grandmother stated that her health has been good, and that her brother has been as well. When asked if it would be possible to see the home where Chipo sleeps, the grandmother immediately complied with excitement, advising that she had prepared a meal for myself and the other guests. She hurriedly went into the kitchen to show her kitchen – so immaculately tidy, and proceeded to show me the small room the she, Chipo, and her grandson sleep in. Once again, clothes were folded, tidy and clean. The grandmother slept on a twin size bed, made out of trees from the area, and Chipo and her brother slept on two separate cots – about the size of a bench – along the side, partially covered by hanging clothes. She lovingly pointed out where each of the children slept, and I could almost envision the love that resided in that room each night, simply based on the love she showed to us as her visitors.

We sat down at the table, with myself very evidently in the most honored place, and began to serve us a meal that she had prepared. I wish I could remember the name of what it is she prepared (check back, as I may edit this to include the name at a future date), but it was essentially water flavoured by the maize that was sitting in the bottom of each individual cup. With pride she provided the cup to me – with a bowl underneath, just in case the cup leaked (which it did) – and watched me with anticipation as I lifted the cup to my lips.

I will admit there was a part of me that hesitated in this moment, knowing that sanitary water is such an issue in these parts, but I said a quick prayer – understanding that this will be a once in a lifetime experience to receive such a sincere gift by the guardian of a child we have sponsored – and took a drink. It had a fairly pleasant taste, reminding me somewhat of a high fibre drink that you would purchase from a herbal store that you drink simply because you know it is good for you and not because of the taste. My colleagues commended me, following the visit, on my response to her offer and my willingness to complete the majority of the drink.

Following our ‘lunch’, I asked the grandmother if she would show me around her homestead. She responded with an enthusiastic ‘yes’ and proceeded to show me her Maize (corn) storage area, her garden area from the year previous, her kitchen and her current garden (in retrospect, I cannot help but wonder if this was not part of sustainable agriculture – especially given the perceived abilities of the grandmother). The rows were perfect – no weeds existed in the plot of land, and you could tell she took great pride in her garden. In many ways, based on the cleanliness of her home and the attention to detail that she gave to everything in her home, my heart
transported back to our home, where I see many of those qualities in my own wife. I think they would get along fine…!

We walked by the group of onlookers, who were – as explained by our interpreter – widows and orphans from the community who regularly came to visit. The women were observing while doing each other’s hair, while the children played in the area surrounding them. Chipo’s grandmother then showed me the buildings next to her – which seemed oddly out of place given their condition – and explained that a family lived there, decided they did not like the area, and moved on.

I had been holding Chipo this whole time, and it was evident that she was becoming tired. I asked if it was alright if I rested with her for a while, and was directed to a comfortable shaded area by the side of their home. As Chipo’s breathing became louder and more relaxed, I sang her the song that I regularly sing to our kids prior to their bedtime, a song learned from a lullabye CD by Michael Card, Steve Bell, while holding her in my arms…

“The Lord bless you and keep you…the Lord make His face shine upon you. And give you peace. And give you peace. And give you peace forever…”

It was at this moment that I felt for Chipo as I do for my own kids. That they would be healthy and safe. That they go on to great things. That they know the love of God no matter what life throws at them. That they, ultimately, be happy.
After our rest together, I saw that the vehicle had maneuvered its way out of the mud, likely with the help of other at the village, and advised Chipo and her grandmother that I had some gifts for them that I would like to bring from the World Vision vehicle. As I approached the vehicle, I noticed that one of the widows had offered to carry the bag of Buusu (also known as Mealie Meal), and was walking towards the home. I asked her through motions if she would allow me to do so, so she put the large bag down, offered to tie her headdress onto my head, and I lifted the bag and placed it on my head. All were laughing as I did so, with the exception of the grandmother, who had gone inside her home for a moment.

As soon as the grandmother walked out of her home as saw the bag on my head, she let out a shriek and started to dance and sing at the top of her lungs, continuing on until I placed the bag beside her home. She gave me the biggest hug she could with her small frame, and then continued to dance. Although I knew that I was not comfortable in doing so, I knew that if she asked me to join her, I would – embarrassment and all.

I found out that her excitement was because this one bag of food, which cost me only a few dollars, was enough to feed her and the family for up to 3 months, and that it meant not having to find a way to walk a significant distance to retrieve food during this time. Her joy was so sincere – not the ‘thank you very much’ that we exude when given a gift that we know is not life-sustaining at birthday parties and Christmas, but the joy that comes from the gift of….well, life.

I brought the gifts that my family had prepared for Chipo and her grandmother in Canada, as well as special gifts that my colleagues and the grade 4 students at Linden Christian school, and presented them to the now alert girl. A dress for her to wear. Items that my daughter had selected and played with prior to my departure for Africa, including a toy that was Abigail’s that said ‘We’re sisters!’ when the head is pushed – something I indicated was a message from my daughter to her grand-daughter. A headband, which I placed on her head (incorrectly). Hair clips which barely clipped on to her short hair, a doll that had been made by one of the members on the trip, and other items in a pink carry-case that could be used to store the items in (pink, as we all know, is the international colour for girls). I opened an additional bag to show Chipo’s grandmother the cooking oil, beans and dried fish that I had picked up for the family at the market in Kalomo earlier in the week, and her eyes lit up, followed by even more dancing! It was truly a party, and I was humbled to be part of the reason for this celebration.

The grandmother asked me to wait for a moment, and went inside their home with Chipo. A few short minutes later, out came this precious girl, wearing the dress that we had brought for her. This was a sight that I will never, ever forget…

My colleagues had brought some of the additional gifts to the widows and orphans that were observing all of this, and I brought Chipo over to join her friends in the group. She stood there, showing the items she had received, while I opened the various bags to show them what each item was for. I was fine until I opened one of the bags, which contained a small tub of Play-Dough, and – upon opening the lid – started to work the stuff in my hands…realizing too late that I don’t really know how to craft anything from this gift I had provided. I started to form a shape, hoping I would be inspired to create something majestic for them, and then remembered the great fall-back in Play-Dough construction. Rubbing the blue substance between my palms, I created all I knew to make – a snake – and made the sound of hissing as I moved it around in front of them, to the laughter of those who were there.
The time had come to go. We were already well behind schedule thanks to our multiple encounters with the muddy roads on the way in. Chipo’s grandmother hugged me for one final time, and I picked up Chipo and gave her a hug – and one quick kiss – and we started to leave. I knew in my heart that this was not going to be a day that I would soon forget, and was thankful for the opportunity to truly get to know this wonderful woman and her two grandchildren in her care, and to take this experience back to my family in Manitoba….

Dear Chipo: It was so nice to meet you today, and to get to hold you and sing to you. You are a beautiful girl, and God loves you very, very much – as do we. We will pray for you, Chipo, and for your family and grandmother, from Canada – that you will remain healthy, that you will be able to attend school and obtain a future, and that you will not fall into the unhealthy temptations that many encounter in Zambia. We pray that you will become a godly women, a strong women (like your grandmother) and that you would feel our prayers from Canada, and the love of God. Thank you for allowing me to see a bit of what it is you encounter each day, and for blessing me (and my family as I pass on this experience to them) with this experience. Today is the day we will travel to meet the child our family sponsors, Chipo. As with many of the roads leading to the homes and projects that the World Vision team provides service to, it starts off pleasant. Highway out of the town of Kalomo, dirt roads for a short distance, and then…well, let’s just say I was unsure if we were going to make it to the home of our sponsored child on this very important day. The dirt roads turned into grass paths, which turned into dirt paths, which then became swampy pools of water in the middle of fields. We were able to maneuver through the first swampy areas, thanks to the 4 X 4 abilities of the vehicle. Often our driver, Eustance, would get out of the vehicle, survey the road ahead (you could almost see the wheels turning in his head as he attempted to get us to our final destination), and then take whatever action was required to drive through the streams and muddy terrain that lead up to Chipo’s home. And, overall, that was all that was required.

We had two choices at one point in the journey, and neither looked particularly promising to me. It reminded me of the dirt road near my home in Saskatchewan that we would attempt to drive as early in the spring as possible, after the winter snow had melted. You had a 50 / 50 chance of getting through some of these marshy areas, and I was leaning more towards 25 / 75 (25 being getting through) on this journey. We picked the one that looked to be the best option, but only after Eustance surveyed the options. We all were silent, watching this with great interest. Eustance hopped back into the vehicle, started moving forward – and then the tires started spinning.

Now, of the two vehicles being used during our visit, one borrowed from another ADP in Zambia, we were in the one that had a winch. Eustance had advised us that this was a blessing, as it often had to be used. However, after extending the winch, it was discovered that there were no trees close enough to use as an anchor. Plan B? Cut down a tree, place the wood under the tires, and pray for the best.

Makes me wonder what happens if you are not prepared with an axe for situations like this, and are alone. I was starting to wonder if we needed to plan to move in with one of the families in the area until the other driver was sent to get us.
We were able to get out, but only after wading ankle-deep in the soil of Zambia. We wiped our shoes off, hoped into the van, and continued to travel…only to encounter the same situation once again.
Thankfully, we had a winch to assist, and we were close enough to the home of our sponsored child that I could simply walk to her home.

What an adventure to get to this cherished place, the place that I have pictured over and over in my head since confirming my visit to Zambia. I climbed the slight hill to Chipo’s home, and prepared my heart for what was to come….

I headed off to bed, with a renewed peace. A peace that it is alright to not be connected in multiple ways (cell phones, internet, Facebook, Skype, texting, etc.) while in Africa, and the concern I had about not being available to blog as often as I had wished had lifted.

I did, however, long to share the experiences I was having here in Zambia with my wife, Karen, and my four kids (Micah, Abigail, Joel and Jordan). I would have to be patient.

I think back to Ricardo, Katolo, “Freddy” and the other children that my wife and I have sponsored in our (almost) fourteen years of marriage, as well as prior to this, and I cannot help but feel a mixture of emotions. What will it be like? What will I say? How will the family respond? What will their needs be? Will Chipo be healthy? How is the family being affected at the start of their involvement in the sponsorship program? What if Chipo is scared of me?

After a life-long journey, all understandings about the lives of the children we have sponsored, and the sponsorship program itself, will be either confirmed or questioned. Am I ready for this?

Yes, I am. With some trepidation.

It was this exact menu that could be found at each of the dining establishments we would visit in Kalomo during our stay – both for lunch and for dinner. We ordered our food 24 hours in advance, as for a group such as ours it required that she go to the market to pick up the vegetables, meat and other supplies for our meals.

Although the food at Zu’s was excellent, we all looked forward to a week-end trip to Livingstone, where we would be able to order from a wider selection of items. We understood others who had gone before us who had stated that – by the time we returned – we would likely avoid fried chicken and chips for a while…

We met in a large room with many families in attendance, and our names were each called, along with the families we would be meeting. We met up as a group, and then found a place in the courtyard to meet. Actually, Shylet, one of the children sponsored by my family, let us to where SHE thought we should go…

There I was, on a lone stool, while the families of Musanka (Maria, grandmother), Shylet (Felix, Father) and Cledwin (Mother, unsure of name) sat. After showing the children the pictures that I had with me of them, we started a discussion. I started off by advising each of the families who is sponsoring them in Canada, and then sent greetings to them on behalf of each family. I then shared with them what my role was with World Vision Canada, and how excited I have personally been to meet each of them. I advised them that, in the few short days we had in Zambia, we had fallen in love with the country and its people.

I explained a little about Canada, explaining the seasons and the temperatures…which brought some laughter and questions about why we live in that type of temperature. Zambia has the rainy season and the dry season, so the idea of four seasons and what the temperatures were like were intriguing. They asked if we had mountains in Canada, and I was able to explain the diverse landscapes that we have in the country.

I am listening to the audio that I had recorded of our discussions, with the help from one of our World Vision Kalomo staff interpreting, and these are some of the highlights:

Q: How old is your child? How many brothers and sisters? What does your child like to do for fun?
A: (Shylet) 3 years old, one sister. She likes to play with dolls and do writing.
A: (Musanka) 4 years old, 2 girls and 3 boys as siblings. Likes to take things and pretend to talk on the phone (I explained my twins, Joel and Jordan do the same) and to play with trucks. He likes to draw, and would like to go to school someday. (His responses were more like whimpers, but his caregiver was able to fill in the blanks). A: (Cledwin) X years old, 5 brothers (3 older, 2 younger). His infant brother, Edward, joined him. Likes to play with his brothers and play sports. Enjoys English as his favourite subject.

Q: Tell me a little bit about what your family does.
A: (Shylet) Keeps livestock.
A: (Musanka) There are many challenges with agriculture. Musanka’s grandmother likes to knit.
A: (Cledwin) Plow, but they do not have animals to place on the land or to help them plow. Being a mother to her many children. Cledwin helps around the house by collecting firewood, collecting water (which is a great distance away), along with his siblings.

Q: What would you say are the greatest challenges that you have? A: (Cledwin) They do not have enough water, or animals to help them.

Q: What would you like me to tell the people of Canada?
A: (Shylet) To tell the people in Canada about the challenges in Zambia, and to ask them to help further.
A: (Musanka) In Zambia, there are two types of people. Those who are doing well and those who are not doing well. We are the ones not doing well.
A: (Cledwin) We don’t have the shelter that we need, or clean enough water. A: Each family advised that they had great difficulty accessing clean water, and how much of a challenge it is to their lives. They each asked if they could have clean water, their lives would be much easier.

I thanked them for their time, and then asked if I could ask one additional question…

Q: What makes you happy?
A: (Cledwin) We are very happy that you have chosen to come visit us, and to sponsor our children.
A: (Musanka) I am very happy to see you, Chris.
A: (Shylet) Very happy that you are going to tell people about sponsorship, and very happy to meet me. Very happy that your family has decided to sponsor our children, and to help us together with World Vision.

I concluded by bringing out the gifts that the families in Canada, including the wonderful Grade four students at Linden Christian School, had sent with me for their sponsor children, although I had great difficulty letting go of Shylet, who had been sitting on my lap for the majority of the interview. I told them how much I missed my kids, and said that their kids were my kids for now, if that was alright with them. They all smiled and nodded their heads. Their eyes lit up as I pulled out each gift.

Few words were spoken, as the gifts were distributed. Musanka, who had been provided with some clothing, a book, and a harmonica by his sponsors, walked around for the remainder of our time playing his harmonica non-stop. All those who were at the visit will not forget the image of this small boy, walking around and playing his harmonica. Shylet, who had been provided with a shirt, some hair clips, ‘bubbles’ and a doll, held tightly to her doll. Cledwin, who had been provided with a soccer ball, some card games and a shirt, kicked the soccer ball around in the distance. Gifts were also provided for all siblings, as well as a blanket and warm hat for each child. Smiles crossed each of the care-givers faces as the gifts were opened.

There was so much joy – both on my part as the giver (on behalf of their sponsors) and on the part of the sponsored children – in the time we had together. Small, simple things that mean so much to the recipients, a reminder to us all to correspond with these precious children and families we support.
I can still hear the harmonica playing, a sound that will forever – no matter where I am standing – remind me of this special moment in Zambia…

As we drove up to the clinic, we passed several children who were at the clinic – either because they had heard there were visitors, or because this was a central gathering place. We found our seats in a covered area with benches, and prepared for a presentation on the clinic by the World Vision ADP worker, as well as the head nurse.

We were advised that the project was completed in 2004 (two thousand zero four in Zambia speak), and that prior to the building of the clinic there were no facilities outside of Zimba (a 45 min drive, or a 4 – 6 hour walk)available prior to the construction of the facility.

The head nurse – who we were to learn was the only nurse – shared with us sobering facts about the clinic. 600 to 800 patients were seen by this nurse each month. Prior to the building of the clinic, the rate of maternal deaths were massive, due to the lengthy walk to the hospital – most would simply give birth along the road on the way to the hospital in Zimba, and many would simply die due to complications along the side of the road. Since the clinic has become operational, these numbers have changed significantly – in fact, there have been almost no deaths due to birthing complications in the past 6 years as a result of this simple clinic.

As the nurse continued to share the benefits of World Vision partnering with the local people in building this clinic, as well as some of the challenges (they regularly must travel to Zimba for the required medications), an overwhelming sense of pride came over me – to the point where it was hard to contain. She continued to share how this clinic has made a difference to the people of the area, sharing her heart for the needy in the area, and her desire to serve God in this way.

After the presentation was over, I pulled my colleague, Charmaine, aside and wept. Never before have I been more proud to work with this organization than at that moment. Never before had I realized how the past 20 years of sponsorship has impacted so many. Even as I type this, I cry knowing that what we are doing – and what so many of our friends, family and fellow Canadians are doing – IS making a difference. I’ve seen it first-hand. And I know that it works.

She had wonderful things to say about World Vision, and the work they were doing. This organization is well respected and is seen as doing wonderful work in this small community, to the point where those who have World Vision on their resume are well regarded and have great opportunities to work with other groups and organizations. This was yet another example of this…and it was good for me to hear of the work of World Vision from a different perspective.

Here is an explanation of how the issue of HIV / AIDS has become so massive in the country of Zambia. Let me caution you that it is a little hard to read:

“The loneliness of the long distance lorry driver: The border towns heave with truckers, traders and a mobile, migrant population attracted by the possibility of making money. Forced to wait at every border for papers to be processed, the truckers are often more than happy to pay for the services of girls propelled by poverty into prostitution…As an example, a long-distance lorry driver will set out from Uganda with a cargo bound for South Africa. He will have to cross six countries and stop at twelve border crossings. He will be stuck at each of these border crossings for up to three weeks. There he may have sex with a girl each night, but let’s assume he is more circumspect or short of money and will only have sex with a girl every third night. This is 84 girls. If it is every night it is 252 girls. Any one of those girls may be HIV positive. When you bear in mind that he has to retrace his entire route in order to get back home (now we are up to at least 168 girls), you realize that our driver would have been incredibly fortunate to escape infection. He will then pass on the infection to a quarter of his clients…..according to the 1 in 4 statistics, we could now have 42 sex workers who have caught HIV/AIDS from this one man. Most of them will have sex with three or four men per night. Let’s say it is only two. Bearing in mind that there are no holidays built into the trucking occupation, each of these 42 sex workers could have intercourse with 730 men a year. Let’s take off a few nights for sick leave and nights out with the girls or the boyfriend, and take a conservative stab at 700 men. 700 men X 42 sex workers = 29,400. Divide this number by four and there is a very real possibility that 7,350 men could contract HIV / AIDS as a direct consequence of the actions of one lorry driver. If it only finished here. Each of these men, in their turn, will have sex with…conservatively, 168. This is how the corridors of death have come to be built all over this beautiful continent….” Excerpt, “The Son of God is Dancing”, Adrian Plass

We had the students dropped off at Zu’s Guest House, and started by having each introduce themselves – including what type of animal they are most like. The responses we received were quite sweet, and it took a bit to get the words out of some of the children, but we got to know each other a bit more through this activity prior to spending six sessions together.

We had the students group into twos, and gave each group a camera. The first lesson was on taking pictures using different angles and distances. We were surprised that not only the kids became engaged with this activity, but a pair of older men and one of the chaperone women (together with one of our team members) were also curious about how to do so. We had asked for 10 different poses to be taken of each member of the team (I think we ended up with about 40), and it was interesting seeing the reactions from the children – as well as the adults – as they viewed their pictures. Truly priceless!

We will be hosting another 5 workshops over the upcoming 10 days, and will be ending our workshops with a gallery showing where the community will be invited to attend. It is interesting to me how something so simple can give such joy to others, which is a learning that I can also take back with me when I return to Winnipeg.

At the conclusion of the evening, as we were finalizing details for the upcoming day, a colleague of mine asked if I had an item that I had in my room. After locating the item, and attempting to leave the building, it was evident that someone had locked all of the doors to the facility, in essence not allowing anyone in the building to leave. After several attempts to ‘escape’, a voice came from the other side of the door. “Yes sir?”. “Would you be able to unlock the door, please?”. “Yes, Sir”. A rattle of keys later, and the door is finally unlocked.

It seems the Kalomo Guest House has a night watchman. I’ll admit I was a little concerned about the idea of being locked inside the building, and wondered why this man had the only key that I was aware of to the facility. The beds I had seen stacked up on the porch upon arriving at the guest house, that is where the night watchman ‘rested’ while keeping us safe.

We know that God is going ahead of us (and, as we have indicated in our team discussions, resides with us in every moment), and this ‘night watchman’ was a reminder to me that. There is such a blessing upon this trip – upon those who were brought together from Canada to take this journey, upon the Area Development Project (ADP), and upon the work of World Vision does in Kalomo, Zambia. I look forward to sharing more about this journey with you….

Colin Zacharias, one of our team members from Saskatchewan, offered to fix this by letting me use one of his tools to turn the cold water on. I was appreciative, as the Zambia soil from the day prior was clinging to me, and a shower would be the perfect way to start the day. I was not going to let something as small as a missing tap get in the way of a good shower, so I must admit I had a smile on my face as I stood there with the shower head in hand, with the knowledge that I had fixed the issue. I turned the water on – both hot AND cold – and awaited the blast of water from the shower head. But, there was nothing. Waited longer, still nothing. ‘That’s odd’, I thought to myself. ‘The taps are on, but where is the water?’. I had been foiled again….the metal hose was split and the water suddenly started spraying every where but where I needed it.

Needless to say, I gave up on using the shower outside of my room. In fact, the water supply was turned off today for some unknown reason. Just another of those conveniences, such as electricity that works with all of what we require to be charged and powered up, lights that remain on at all times, and reliable water sources that we all are going to be adjusting to. For us Canadians, it is an inconvenience. For the people of Zambia, just a regular part of life.

Children are provided with education as part of a government program up until grade 7. Unfortunately, many will end their education following that age given most cannot afford to attend following this grade. And, the costs of education increase sharply after grade 9, meaning there are a select few who can afford to carry on.

I had opportunity to visit the headmaster’s office at the second school we visited. I asked him why there were 20 books for grade 6 math, 3 for grade 3, and only 10 for grade 4 in this school of about 500 students. He stated that it was due to lack of funding, and that he had hopes that someday there would be enough books for all in his school. As I listened to him, I could not help to be impressed with the man’s passion for his students, his dreams for their future, and his willingness to manage in his current circumstances.

After the two school visits, we headed back to our guest house for the day, and took opportunity to do an activity that we do around our table every day with the kids at home – “3 Favourite Things”. We shared about the beauty of the people of Zambia, the inspiration that we had received in visiting the schools, and the singing that the students had done for us as we left the schools. We had fallen in love with this country, and yet had so many experiences yet to enjoy…

We had a good discussion about the challenges facing the team, including the high rate of HIV / AIDS cases in the region. This was going to be the start of the upcoming days that we had together as a team, and – together with this group of passionate individuals – I could tell that it was going to be an incredible learning
experience….

Ok, it’s a million ‘Kwacha’, which is the main currency used in Zambia (in addition to U.S. dollars). One Canadian dollar is currently worth $4,757.39 Kwacha, which is used in the markets, at the guest lodges, and at the local grocery, and – I must admit – it’s not easy to do the conversion. It was a bit of a shock to pay $15,000 Kwacha for four oranges, but it is only about $3.00 in Canadian Funds. Some other examples that I am reading as I unpack some of the items picked up in Livingstone on our way out to Kalomo include:

Fruit Juice $11,850 Kwacha ($2.49 CDN)
Apples (4) $7,600 Kwacha ($1.60 CDN)
Lunch (Pizza) $25,000 Kwacha ($5.25 CDN)

And to give you a sense of how much of a shock it is to switch from Canadian dollars to Kwacha, the cost of a standard hotel in
Livingstone is $380,000.00 Kwacha – or about 79 Canadian dollars.

Secondly, the reason for the inconsistant posting has everything to do with the inconsistent internet access – as well as other challenges we face – in updating our blogs. While I sit here in the guest house, where the water has – once again – been turned off due to some breakdown at the dam, it makes perfect logical sense that internet access would not be easy to come by. However, prior to arriving, I believed it would be a daily activity.

Please pass on this blog to others, and I have many stories of the people of Zambia to post. For those keeping track, I am on day 2 of the total of 12 days on this journey in Zambia, and I know you will be moved as I tell my story of meeting my family’s sponsored child, and as we visit other projects that World Vision is involved in.

At the entrance to the building were two bed frames stacked on top of each other taking up space in the entrance. Past the first door, with it’s key-hole lock and rustic handle, was a room with a large table (that we would be meeting at for a good number of our meals in the days to come), some couches, a fireplace, and a television. I searched out room #3, unsure of what conditions I would be staying in for the next two weeks, and opened the door using the skeleton key that the guest house manager, Raoul, had provided.

Two beds, one TV (which I would find out later was only able to provide a picture, and no sound – not that it mattered, as I was in Zambia to experience the ‘real Africa’ after all). Two plump spiders the size of the palm of my hand, something that scurried under the bed (it was not large, so I think I am OK – although I have yet to look under the bed to see if it still remains), and a single light bulb hanging from a wire in the middle of the room. No mosquito net, so I knew that would need to be looked into, but – overall – what I would have expected and, strange as it might sound, hoped for on this journey. One of my fears was that our accommodations would not represent the culture of the country well, and that we would simply slip into our own ‘little Canada’ every night. This will not be the case at the Kalomo Guest house.

I’ve adjusted to sharing my room with my newly discovered friends (partially thanks to a mosquito net that was set up prior to my first night), the TV now has sound (but I have decided to use it only as a night light instead), and I have adjusted the room to the point where it is my ‘Zambian home’ for the time in Kalomo.

Now if I could just get the electricity in my room to work.

Now, you have to understand one thing about me; when I have been in markets on previous travels, I have always pretty much followed my wonderful wife, Karen, around and simply held the wallet. 

That has been my job until this point in our marriage, so the idea of going to a market – complete with people yelling out to get your attention, bartering back and forth and experiencing individuals who desperately wished – and needed – to make as much on the transaction as possible was something that caused me a bit of anxiety, especially as I was just starting to adjust to this new culture and understand how the currency works in relation to the U.S, / CDN dollar. How was I to know how many Kwacha was the correct amount to pay for an item? What if I messed up and gave the wrong bill, and ended up running out of money while I was in Kalomo? What should I do if I have two vendors fighting for my business? 

In contrast to the harried, busy – and often pushy – environment of the few markets Karen and I have been to, this market was more pleasant than most of the malls in Canada. These people were here to purchase the staples they required for life, meet up with friends, family members and business partners, and, quite honestly, to enjoy life! After hours of flight, busy airports, and security checkpoints of the days prior (so many I can’t count anymore), this serenity was well appreciated. 

I might even go back! 

A few highlights from the market include visiting with the children who were hovering by the feet of their parents as they worked to make a living, the industrious nature of so many who were there (from ‘on the spot’ tailoring, to shoe sales men to farmers selling the results of their latest crops), this was one of those times of shopping that I did not wish would end too soon…. 

Following a great evening full of a variety of activities, we settled down for supper at the First Choice Guest House, went through some of the details, unpacked and the went to bed. I am hoping the bed net works, because the special friends that I discovered in my room upon arrival have evidently invited their friends and are throwing a party. Let me just tuck in that bed net just a little bit tighter…!

Our time in Livingstone reminded me of previous vacations in the Dominican Republic – a more laid back environment with varied residential homes, as well as a very active tourist trade. As we went to change our money to the local currency (Kwacha), we were approached by vendors asking us to purchase varied trinkets and items. The ‘local’ eating establishment had a varied menu of Italian pastas and standard American / British fare, and the local supermarket did not look unlike our Safeway stores (except for the prices, which are very hard to get used to seeing – but more on that in a future blog). Even the accommodations, although not adequate for those travelling in North America – held few surprises. The airport, although there were some obvious differences from the ones I typically land in, was still very practically built and organized. So far, our journey to Africa has consisted of these “comforts”…including hours of being served on various planes by the British Airways staff so well the hours truly flew by. So far, I’d have to say, the journey has been quite comfortable and not difficult at all. However, we are all aware that this is part of the transition to the “Real Zambia”.

So, we travel on this ‘broken road’ on our way to our home for the next 10 days – a road that has evidently not been a priority for many years – driving off to side sand roads to avoid the new construction that is occurring on the majority of the trip (the goal is to re-pave the road between Kalomo and Livingstone within the next year…or two). Although this ‘broken road’ is not a comfortable ride, there is a hope – hope in seeing many Zambians employed with this project, hope that there is progress occurring in the region – and that hope is realized as we get closer to Kalomo, where the first phase of this construction has created a ride smoother than many of our highways in Manitoba – through picturesque rolling hills with dense trees – many that seem taken directly from paintings I have seen in the past – and corn and sunflower crops show-casing the hard work of the people of Zambia by the side of the road.

It’s a broken road, but it is in repair. It’s a broken country, but – thanks to the hard work of people such as our colleagues at World Vision Zambia, mixed with the spirit and energy of the people of this beautiful country – there is a sense of hope from our colleagues as we talk on the journey to Kalomo. A hope the we anticipate being part of as we journey through Zambia and bring you along on our journey….

During our travels, we had a partial day in London where we had opportunity to travel on the Underground transit system, and experience Big Ben, the Pariliament Buildings, the Thames river, and many other historic sites via the London Eye.  Some truly breath-taking views.

After over 30 hours on four separate flights, I arrived in Livingstone, Zambia, this afternoon and had opportunity to meet some wonderful people who work with World Vision Zambia.  We will be travelling to the World Vision Kalomo Area Development Project tomorrow!

Zambia – both in it’s landscape and it’s people – is breath-taking.

Ok, it’s not really a dilemma, but – thanks to the generosity of so many of our friends, the amazing group of grade four’s at Linden Christian School, and those who have sponsor children that I plan on visiting,  I have officially reached the maximum amount I can pack – and that is with the special humanitarian allowance that Air Canada and British Airways provides!

So, I am prioritizing what it is exactly that I ‘need’ to take with me on this journey.  Do I need a second pair of sandles? Likely not.  Is it important for me to have a handy kit to put my toothbrushes and shaving items into?  No, a ziplock will suffice.  Do I really need to bring my toothpaste?  Ok, for the sake of the wonderful team I will be travelling with, I will leave that in…

Out go a couple of shirts and a pair of pants.  In go more gifts for those in the development project that we will be visiting.  Here I am, during the final hours, prioritizing what is actually important for me to have as I go on this journey, what it is exactly I need to get by.

And – yes – that is a good thing.

The statistics are sobering…including the fact that I am currently at the age of average life expectancy for the people of Zambia*…

Who are the people? Once a British protectorate, Zambia has been independent since 1964 (when it’s name was changed from ‘Northern Rhodesia’ to ‘Zambia’). It is headed by a president elected by the people. Most Zambians are of Bantu origin. The country’s official language is English.  It is bordered by Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Namibia.      Life in Zambia can be difficult for both adults and children. Even today, almost half of the population lacks access to safe water. This leads to medical problems and affects the quality of life for individuals, families, and entire communities. Recurring droughts also are a concern because they threaten the food supply.  Rural Zambians usually live with their extended families in huts that are clustered together. A spirit of cooperation prevails as family members share work, assets, and the experiences of daily life.  Some Zambians want to have as many offspring as possible because they are highly valued. A large family means more hands to help on the farm and assures that parents will be cared for as they age.In Zambia, cousins are sometimes referred to as “brothers” and “sisters.” For this reason, the number of siblings that sponsored children write about when communicating with sponsors might change from letter to letter. What is it like to live there? Zambia is the third most urbanized country in Africa, with 60 percent of its population iving in urban areas.The country is named for the Zambezi River, which flows from its source in northern Zambia to the Indian Ocean, approximately 1,600 miles away. The famous Victoria Falls are located along the Zambezi River. They boast a drop twice as long as that of Niagara Falls. Zambia consists largely of high plateaus with elevations ranging from 3,000 to 4,500 feet above sea level. The altitude produces a pleasant climate in much of Zambia, even though it is located in the tropics. Changes in temperature and precipitation mark the shifts between the country’s three seasons: the warm, wet season (November to April); the cool, dry season (April to August); and,the hot, dry season (August to November).  Zambia is a beautiful nation that is home to antelopes, zebras, monkeys, and elephants. One of the largest concentrations of wildlife in Africa can be found in Zambia’s Luangwa Valley National Park.  Zambians sometimes encounter special problems because their country is landlocked and heavily dependent on road and rail transportation. For example, people living in rural communities might wait as long as two months for mail to arrive. This past week, I had the opportunity to send copies of Adrian & Bridget Plass’ chronicle of their journey to Zambia a few years ago to those participating in the upcoming trip to Zambia – at the recommendation of on of our volunteers on the trip, Donna – entitled ‘The Son of God is Dancing….A Message of Hope’. After ensuring all of the copies were sent out, I packed my copy into my computer bag for future reading. After sharing with my wife, Karen, about some of the plans for the journey last night, I pulled out my copy and started to familiarize myself with the book – just in case I did not have time to read it prior to departing for Zambia. After reading the introduction by Bridget Plass, I could not put it down.

Fast forward to this morning. As we were preparing to get our 4 kids out the door, I picked up our bulky weekly package of flyers, and picked out my favourite weekly flyer – you know, the one with everything that anyone would ever need, and that always has ‘something different’ featured in it. This week, stuck in the corner of one of the pages was an item the struck my eye. After reading about the dire situations of many in Zambia last night, and the stories of those families affected by HIV / AIDS and poverty, my stomach could not help but turn a little when I saw it….

Now, don’t get me wrong. I own a few of these appliances – the ones that make our lives just a little more easier. In fact, I can think of a specific coffee maker I own that I am a little too enamoured with. And I think many I know would agree. The items we see in flyers weekly that we can’t help but think we need. BUT, after reading only a portion of the journal of Adrian and Bridget during there visit, I cannot help but feel a little uneasy with this consumer based world I live in – and how I have bought into this. Yes, I am sure we all would like a gadget that spins our onion rings while deep frying them, but there must be more to life. In fact, we all must admit that we know there is.

Over the next month, I expect to wrestle with that. It would be abnormal not to. But I truly hope that whatever impact this visit has on myself and the team of volunteers taking part in this visit, that we can put feet to our convictions upon returning – and inspire others to do the same. No doubt – there will be beauty in this country – the video I posted on the blog earlier this week can attest to that. However, I think it is the beauty of the souls of those that we meet who are living in poverty – most due to no choosing of their own – that will truly inspire myself…and, hopefully, those reading.
